Perth-based scientific technology company Source Certain celebrates its win at the National Seafood Industry Awards 2022 on 15 September 2022. The company won as part of a team with the Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries (ACPF), Australian Prawn Farmer’s Association (APFA) and Curtin University for their contribution to the prawn industry’s national provenance program.

The recognition through this award is a reinforcement of the critical role the company continues to play in protecting some of Australia’s major export industries.

The award category, Research, Development and Extension, sponsored by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), celebrates the ACPF, APFA and FRDC-funded initiative which saw the development and implementation of a program that demonstrated the authenticity of the Love Australian Prawn brand.

It recognises demonstrated excellence in the contributions of individuals, partnerships, businesses, and organisations towards a sustainable and profitable Australian seafood industry. Moreover, the program was technically challenging, end-user driven and addressed high priorities for the industry – trust, transparency and market access.

The initial program involved investment into developing a Provenance Database for farmed and wild-caught Australian prawns including the collection and despatch of more than 1,500 Australian samples across 35 wild-harvest sources and 17 prawn farms.

The samples were then analysed by Source Certain’s forensic laboratory and entered into a Provenance Database giving the industry a means to use forensic technology to verify the provenance of Australian claimed prawns down to individual fishery or specific pond on a farm whilst also verifying species.

The Australian prawn industry’s Provenance Database now contains more than 3,000 samples.

This program was the first of its kind and scale in the seafood industry and in 2021 was extended for a further four years.
